The oldest child of a single mother, Mariah Phillips learned early on the value of responsibility, working hard, and respecting others.
At 19, she was hired to work for minimum wage at Starbucks and by 22, she was promoted to manager. She has been an employee of Starbucks for 21 years, working in various stores with various roles. The mother of five, Mariah worked two jobs to provide a steady income and healthcare for her family, while her husband Derrek, a musician, began to build his small business.
In 2012, while working full time, Mariah graduated magna cum laude from Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in Political Science, History and Education. She became a teacher at an alternative school in Rutherford County, working with students who struggle in the traditional school setting. Recognizing her desire to do more, she completed her master’s degree as an Ayers Fellow at Lipscomb University in 2016 while teaching full time. A proud member of Experience Community Church, Mariah has dedicated herself and her family to thousands of hours of community service over the years. Groups like In Full Motion, TN Veterans Home, Special Olympics, Clean Ocean Action, Oasis Center, and Second Harvest have been some of the many organizations that she has spent her time with.
Mariah believes, like so many of us, that in order to change the way Washington works, we need to change the type of people we are sending to Washington. We need moms who have worked two jobs and understand how hard it can be to make ends meet. We need leaders who will actually work across the aisle to get things done for Middle Tennessee, not another career politician who only works for the special interests. It’s time to change the conversation in Washington.
